Butchie Diano Peña's art is where two currents collide. One on hand, she is a painter, depicting delicate subjects like florals and scenes from a home—a warm meal just prepared, a childhood game of sunkga, a lined pathway leading to a housefront one has walked a million times. On the other, she is a publishing art director guided by an eye for composition and trends, a major contributor in many a photo shoot for print and digital audiences. Butchie is an artist who preserves the classic while exploring the now.

As a Painting Major in Fine Arts from the University of Sto. Tomas, Butchie first explored her artistic sensibilities with the influence of her mother, also a painter and an advertising director. Everything she learned as a oil painter in school, her mother augmented and refined in their one-on-one tutorials. Every brush stroke since has been an ode to these early expressions of creativity.

Though possessing a talent for transforming canvases, Butchie's foray into the world of art was not as a painter but as a member of the media. She served as Metro Society's art director for 10 years, and then as Metro.Style's for two years. During this time, Butchie also worked on providing the art for several lifestyle books focusing on scrumptious finds in Metro Manila. These moves made Butchie realize that her hands were always made to hold a paintbrush.

After almost 20 years without professional painting pursuits, Butchie eased back into the rhythm by experimenting with watercolor. As it was a complete departure from her familiar oils, she was both challenged and stimulated, once again awoken to the beauty of painting.

2023 marked a milestone for Butchie's burgeoning career as a professional painter as she joined the United Women Artists Association of the Philippines. With them, she joined a group exhibit and displayed works tackling themes of still life and botanicals

Butchie's immediate plans for the future include joining more shared exhibits. As for the long-term, she advocates for the accessibility of art. Having first worked with her mother, her classmates, Manila's upper-crust, and finally, a collective of artists from all walks of life, Butchie believes that art can be and should be for all who wish to make and admire it.
